Welcome to my Parlor: Tonya Kinzer!!

It's been a while since I've brought you a new author here at the parlor, but I am sooooo excited to introduce you all to the extremely talented Tonya Kinzer.  If you follow erotica (which I know you do since you're reading this blog) then you've definitely heard of Tonya and her Boss's Pet series.  But on the off chance yo haven't, you have NO idea what you're missing!

Okay, I'll stop jabbering. Tonya's in the chair and all set to get tatted. Time to drip some INK!

*** Check out her awesome trailer!!!***

Sable:  Welcome to the Parlor, Tonya! Thanks so much for being here.  Can you tell the readers a bit about yourself?

Tonya:  I’m the sweetheart next door, of course! The woman you’d least expect to write the kind of stories you only read in the privacy of your own home or on your Kindle/Nook so no one else knows what you’re reading…so no one else knows you read because you enjoy wearing those damp thongs! *gasp* I’m the only one who knows WHY you read those forbidden words in private! Pssst…your secret is safe with me, hon!

Sable: Damp thongs, indeed!  Especially after reading your series,*wink, wink* but I'm getting ahead of myself. Tell us about your book.  What was the inspiration, and how did you get started as a writer?

Tonya: I’ll start with how I got started as a writer. That was so many years ago, I’ve forgotten how long ago but I got tired of reading some of the sappy novels out there 25 years ago and thought I could do at least as good as they did. I began putting words to the page and soon a few stories emerged but it wasn’t until four years ago that I decided to self publish and I love it!

My inspiration was my husband because he just makes me feel beautiful and sexy every single day.  That alone makes for many plot lines to burst into full blown stories with characters that will create a need within YOU and make you NEED to keep reading until you reach the end, panting and wanting more!

Because I know you all will want more, I decided to create The Boss’s Pet series to keep the romance going, in and out of the office. I will pull you into the stories with Nick and Sondra until you can’t stand that YOU are not Sondra…or perhaps Nick for our male readers. You are going to beg for that same feeling that Sondra feels every time a Dom touches her, orders her to her knees or blindfolds her for an unknown adventure! Do I have your attention yet?

Sable: Yes, I'm sure that added a few more damp thongs to the audience! What do you think is trending in the genre? And do you write for the market or more for yourself?

Tonya:  I think erotica is becoming the new romance read for those readers who need more than just sexual tension in their stories.  Most readers will say they’re romance readers but many can’t wait to privately open their Kindle or Nook, or head to their computers, to read our spicy erotica that makes their juices seep and creates an image in their mind of having wild sex with their partners. Those are the readers I write for! The reader who wants to experience the secret fantasy and get the nerve to ask for what they want!

I write for myself and write what I enjoy reading, for the most part, but I also write for the reader who says ‘I wish I had the guts to ask my partner to do that to me!’

Sable:  Completely agree with you about erotica being the new romance.  You can only read so many romance novels before you're wondering "when's somebody gonna get laid already?" Or maybe that's just me...*shrugs*.  How do you know when you’re done and the story on the page is the one you want released?

Tonya:  I get that ‘ahh’ feeling when I know I’ve written enough to get the reader to the point of climax (in the story) that satisfies them with the plot yet I also leave them with an open ending so they crave the next book!

Sable: Can you describe your typical writing day?

Tonya: The first thing I do is grab a coffee and head to my office and computer. Hubby is one who needs to read the paper first. I read the paper before I head to bed, always have. I read email while I’m waking up and check FaceBook and Twitter to see what’s happening. That could take an hour or two, then I market and tweet. I can tell in my sales numbers if I don’t tweet for a day or two so yes, it does make a difference if you’re not on Twitter! Trust me! I have author interviews on my blog each week so I get those ready on Saturdays. During the week I could be on several other blogs as a guest. I try to write in the afternoon but if I have to head to the office for my day job, I may not write until the evening. My days seldom are the same.

Sable: That is so true. Newbies, I know you're lurking, Twitter is a marketing must!  Okay, Tonya, do you INK in other genres? If so, which ones and which is your favorite?

Tonya: Yes, I write in other genres but keep them separate and one genre reader will not know that I write in a totally different genre.  I write under pen names due to my day job and my children. I think they’d drop in their tracks if they knew their mother or favorite author wrote in this genre. Erotica is a special readership and I love it! Every book is a challenge to see if I can accomplish the task of getting my reader on the edge of their seat and as close to cumming as one can get by just reading words on a page.

Sable:  What's next from the wonderfully naughty mind of Tonya?

Tonya: I’m working on book four in the series and Sondra will become brave enough to start giving the orders for a change. She’ll be in charge and the men in her life will be on their knees, so to speak! I won’t ruin it but I think my readers will enjoy book four just as much as the others. Will it be the final book in the series? I haven’t made that decision yet.

Sable: Nice spin! The student becomes the teacher ;) Is there anything you absolutely must have in order to write?

Tonya: My coffee in the morning, water or wine at night. If I’m feeling extra sexy in the morning, Bailey’s works best in my coffee! Music plays a big role when I’m writing and creates a mood all its own, depending on what part of the story I’m working on.

Sable: Okay, let's talk a bit about the writing process.  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Tonya: I’m a pantser - I tried once to plot out what I was going to write, but the characters usually tap my shoulder and let me know that’s not what they have in mind in that part of the story. I may write out a few basic scene plots of where I want to take the story but to say I write an outline…..no! Never have, doubt I ever will, but my way works for me!

Sable:  Are your books plot driven or character driven? And how do you come up with characters?

Tonya: I would have to say plot driven because I give each book a plot that will be reached before the end of the book. I hope my readers can become as strong as my characters and get the nerve to ask their partners for what they really want out of a relationship. Too many of them satisfy their partner while accepting that their needs are not as important. That has to change for women everywhere! We matter and our needs matter!

Characters are always visiting me and I love it! My mind has always had little stories going on with many different characters so writing came easy for me when I started.

Sable: Yes, those characters are great company.  Especially when they rouse you from a deep sleep and demand you write. :) What would you say makes a good love scene? Do they come easy for you?

Tonya: Sexual tension, all five senses, reader involvement and one point of view most of the way through the scene. This is one area the author can’t head hop. That confuses the reader, makes them go back to re-read paragraphs and then they get frustrated because the scene is too hard to follow.

Tension between the characters comes first in everything. I love making my characters crave the other and think about what they want to do. I enjoy sex scenes and they aren’t hard for me to write, but the characters have to satisfy each other for me or show me that later on they will both be satisfied. I also love to taunt the reader and love envisioning those wonderful one-handed readers out there! *wink* I write for you!

Sable:  All of you out there with sticky fingers, (or stuck Kindle buttons and smeared Nook screens), yep, she's talking to you! *giggles* Tonya, how much research goes into your stories?

Tonya: Readers are smart and they will write to us if we haven’t done our research. Don’t assume for one minute that you can write about something without the research taking place. We can’t use all the information we uncover in our research but it leads us to write better when we understand the plots we take on…the why, the where and the how.

Sable: I'm going to jump in here and put on my "evil Sable" hat—actually, "take off the good Sable hat" is more appropriate. It takes months to write a book and to get your story across is usually done in thousands of words.  Can you sum it up for us in one sentence.

Tonya: My books will help you realize that what you want from a relationship can be yours just by asking for what you want from your partner.

Sable: Hear that people? It's not how you ask but what you ask.  Words from the wise :) Back to writing, what are your favorite and least favorite parts?

Tonya: The favorite part of writing is getting the scenes out of my head and onto paper and to watch my world and characters come alive. The least favorite is being interrupted by everyday things that don’t allow me to write when and how long I want to.

Sable: Aww, hell, I'm so FaceBook-minded I was looking for a "like" button on that answer! Speaking of Social Networking, how do you approach marketing and promo? Have any tips you're willing to share?

Tonya: I love the marketing aspect of writing. Marketing is time-consuming but is a necessary part of the publishing business. As writers, we have to take responsibility for getting our name in front of readers, whether you’re self published or sign a contract.  You must have an author website, a blog whether separate or part of your website, a FaceBook page, tweet on Twitter, comment on blogs and other FaceBook pages so readers can see your name and website link out there. It never ends but one has to make time for writing once the marketing starts. I can spend an entire day marketing and not write. Too many of those kinds of days and your writing will fall behind! I enjoy creating my covers and book marks, which leads me to another marketing tip - get your book marks or post cards to other authors who pass them out.  My blog has an address to send your book marks to so they get distributed in goodie bags and in front of readers!

Sable: True and true! I often hear the best marketing is writing your next book. Keep INKing :) Now that you’re published, what advice would you give your novice writing self?

Tonya: I would have created a writing schedule earlier and stick to it because now I have to remind myself to write and not market all the time. I love chatting with readers - doing several guest blog spots can be time consuming too but that is where you meet several of your readers. They love to chat with you so don’t forget they’re out there.

Sable: Last bit of advice for the newbies?

Tonya: Ask for reviews and interview/guest spots on blogs. Many authors are looking for guest authors and many also enjoy helping those new authors get a chance to be in front of readers. Get your website up, Facebook, Twitter, blog, and get your name out there by commenting and tweeting! Find a good critique partner who will help read through for errors and give pointers. Read your work out loud. If it doesn’t read smooth for you, it won’t read smooth for your readers! Learn POV and strive to stay in it. Head hopping makes the reader dizzy and/or they’ll toss the book against the wall! I have a few articles on my website for new readers and enjoy helping where I can.

Sable: I can totally attest to that fact. Tonya granted me my very first interview on her blog and has since connected me with so many other authors who are helping authors!  Thanks so much, Tonya, for stopping by the Parlor and tatting my place with your wisdom!!  Looking forward to book 4 in The Boss's Pet Series!!
